Hosting 101

Holiday hero

It’s the holiday season, which means you are likely hitting or hosting parties from now through the New Year. If you’re the one hosting a party and you have a dog, there’s a little more to consider to ensure both your pets and your guests have a good time this holiday season. Here are some of our fool-proof tips for co-hosting with your canine companion.

Set Up a Safe Space

Crate
  • Create a comfortable space away from the noise and commotion, like a separate room with their favorite bed, toys, or blankets. If they use a kennel, moving it to a quieter part of the house is a great option too. While in their quiet area, make sure they have plenty to do, like chew toys or treat puzzles, to distract them from the commotion. If you have an especially active dog make sure they get a lot of exercise and play time before the party starts.

Tell Your Guests

  • If your pets are friendly, make sure your guests are comfortable around them. But also be clear if there are any house rules regarding pet interactions (e.g., “Please don’t feed them,” or “Don’t let them outside”). This is also a great chance for your guests to let you know about any pet allergies they may have. If your dogs are joining the party, keep an eye on them throughout to make sure your dogs and your guests are getting along well.

Party Safety

  • Make sure any decorations, foods, or drinks that are harmful to pets (e.g., chocolate, alcohol, or certain plants) are out of reach. If your pets are prone to begging or stealing food, consider setting up a food station away from where the pets roam, or keep all snacks covered. It’s important to keep your dog’s collar on them throughout the party in case they make a break for it while letting guests in–be sure to reiterate to your guests that it is important to keep the doors and gates securely closed!

We hope these tips help you and your pup celebrate the holidays with ease this season!
