It’s beautiful to watch our dogs grow with us and to see them turn from puppies to graying old pals. Caring for your senior dog can seem daunting but we are breaking down what you need to do to make sure you give your dog a long and healthy life well into their golden years.
What makes a dog senior?
A dog is generally considered a senior around the age of 7, though this can vary based on breed and size. Smaller breeds, like Cotons or Yorkies, tend to age more slowly, often not reaching senior status until 10 years old, while larger breeds, like Bernies or Great Danes, may be considered seniors by 5 or 6.
Factors like health, activity level, and genetics also play a role in determining when a dog enters their senior years. Basically, this is the time of their life where moving around or other day to day tasks become a little harder and looking after their diet and wellness becomes even more important.
How do I care for my senior dog?
Not a lot needs to change from year to year other than their diet and exercise. You need to be sure that your dog is eating all of the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay healthy. They may not feel as active as they were in their puppy days, so shorter walks or gentle games at home may be more their speed.
If they are experiencing joint pain you can get them an orthopedic bed or they may need a pain or mobility supplement. Check out PetPlate’s Mobility Supplemental Chews here. Most importantly, make sure to give them lots of love and stay on top of your regular vet visits!
How can give my dog their longest and healthiest life?
The three most important things you can do for your dog are keep a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and give them tons of love. By making their physical and emotional health your priority, as well as staying on top of regular vet appointments, you will ensure that your dog is getting all of the vitamins and nutrients they need, staying physically fit, and, perhaps most importantly, is happy.
