Can My Dog Eat Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin spice is made up of spices, typically including nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves or allspice. Ironically, pumpkin spice products may not even have pumpkin in them!
Let’s take a look at some of the components of pumpkin spice and whether or not they are safe for dogs to eat.
- Nutmeg: According to the American Kennel Club, nutmeg contains myristicin, which is toxic to dogs. Dogs who eat myristicin may experience an increased heart rate, high blood pressure, hallucinations, and seizures. ISo it’ssafe to say that we definitely need to keep our dogs away from nutmeg!
- Cinnamon: Unlike nutmeg, cinnamon is not toxic to dogs. However, it’s still not considered safe to feed your dog anything with large amounts of cinnamon in it. Plus, many goodies with cinnamon in them, such as baked goods, tend to have large amounts of sugar and fat, which are dangerous to a dog’s health. Bottom line? Cinnamon in tiny quantities is unlikely to hurt your dog, but other ingredients in the food, such as nutmeg or sugar, can hurt your dog. I think you can remove the stuff about sugar and other harmful ingredients in baked goods since it is mentioned again in the last paragraph of the section. Cinnamon actually has some health benefits for dogs if given in a small dose. It has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to slow bacteria growth and regulate blood sugar.
- Ginger: Ginger is considered generally safe for dogs, although fresh ginger should always be avoided. Large quantities of ginger may also be dangerous, so limiting your dog’s portion of ginger is wise. I haven’t heard that raw ginger is harmful to dogs; it’s actually commonly used in raw food diets. Ginger also has digestive health benefits, so small doses are actually good for dogs.
- Cloves/Allspice: Cloves are generally only a problem for dogs when consumed raw or in a concentrated form, like clove oil. So spices, like clove and allspice, are considered relatively safe for consumption by dogs.
With all this said, you may be wondering how you can share the delights of pumpkin spice with your dog. We recommend avoiding any types of human pumpkin spice foods because they typically contain nutmeg, along with high amounts of calories, fat, and sugar, which can hurt their health.
Is Pumpkin Spice Good for Dogs?
Pumpkin is an excellent source of nutrients and fiber for your dog. The American Kennel Club recommends looking for canned, plain pumpkins because other canned pumpkin mixes may contain additives, sugar, salt, and spices that can irritate your dog’s stomach. Make sure you skip out on anything labeled canned pumpkin pie, which is sure to be laden with harmful spices.
Be warned that large amounts of pumpkin can cause stomach upset due to the high amount of fiber in pumpkin, so monitoring the amount of pumpkin your dog eats is also important.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make these delicious pumpkin spice dog treats:
- Five tablespoons vegetable oil
- Three teaspoons xanthan gum
- 1½ cups canned pumpkin puree
- 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
- Four eggs
- 1 cup cooked sweet potato, mashed or riced
- Four teaspoons pumpkin spice (it might be better to list out the individual spices since it was indicated in the section above that pumpkin spice normally contains nutmeg.)
- 2½ cups coconut flour
- 1½ cups rice flour
- 1½ cups almond meal
- Raw pepitas (I’d just say pumpkin seeds, I don’t think all our customers will know the terms pepitas)
